Sugar Project Community Workshop

The Sugar Project teamed up with The Organization for Prostitution Survivors Art Workshop for a monthly year long generative workshop. Through a conceptual theme based art making processes the OPS community members created art from their own thoughts, emotions, values and personal stories. Over the year the women created an installation of mixed media shoe sculptures. Using high heel shoes as a starting image of culturally prescribed femininity, they recreated, remodeled, reclaimed, decorated, cut, burned, smashed, painted, drew on, glued to, and in some cases destroyed the shoes, harnessing their own voices, lifting up their lives and exercising empowerment.

The OPS shoes were one of the most important and meaningful parts of The Sugar Project and still exist as part of the organization’s art collection.
